Adobe Firefly Review
Updated March 15, 2025
Our Verdict
The best AI image generation tool for professional designers and anyone who needs commercially safe outputs. The Creative Cloud integration is excellent. Standalone pricing is harder to justify.
Adobe Firefly is the AI image generation tool trained exclusively on licensed content — making it the only generative AI design tool that's commercially safe by design. Integrated into Creative Cloud, it's the professional's choice for AI-assisted design.
Pros
- +Trained on licensed content — commercially safe to use
- +Deep Creative Cloud integration (Photoshop, Illustrator)
- +Generative Fill in Photoshop is genuinely transformative
- +Style consistency with reference images
Cons
- −Standalone subscription less compelling than CC bundle value
- −Slower to adopt new model capabilities vs. Midjourney/DALL-E
- −Best features require existing Creative Cloud subscription
How It Scores
Full Review
Adobe Firefly's defining advantage isn't image quality — it's legal clarity. Every image generated by Firefly is produced from content that Adobe has licensed or that is in the public domain. If you're a professional designer, marketing agency, or anyone producing content for clients, that's not a trivial differentiator. It's the difference between commercially safe and legally ambiguous.
The Generative Fill feature in Photoshop is the product's highest point. The ability to select an area of an image, describe what you want there, and have it rendered plausibly with context awareness — that's not a gimmick. It meaningfully accelerates retouching and compositing workflows.
Generative Expand (extending images beyond their original borders) and Generative Remove (intelligently removing objects with background reconstruction) are both genuinely useful for practical design work.
Where Firefly lags: pure creative output quality. For generating art, illustrations, or concept imagery, Midjourney still produces results that designers prefer aesthetically. Firefly is better suited to working within existing images than generating from scratch.
The value question is straightforward: if you already use Creative Cloud, Firefly is essentially included and essential. If you're considering Firefly standalone, the $9.99/month is reasonable for commercial use cases. If you're a solo creator not doing client work, the commercial safety advantage matters less and you might prefer the creative output of other tools.
